Oh uni (otherwise known as sea urchin), how I love you so! Your buttery sea flavored goodness reminds me of the same umami sensation I get when I eat bacon. What would any of us uni fanatics do without you around… excuse me, I had a moment.
In honor of that savory roe found in our favorite black barbed sea hedgehogs, I wanted to present you with my top 5 uni restaurants in Los Angeles for 2014. However, before I get started with the list, I have to give an honorable mention to Bestia. I have yet to try this place but one of my uni partner’s in crime, @fayantoinette, has been raving about it. So without further adieu, here are my picks!
I know what you’re thinking, isn’t Hog considered pork? You’re absolutely correct, however this fine establishment does have a very delectable appetizer in the form of uni over toast. 2852 W Sunset Blvd
Los Angeles, CA 90026
This little spot nestled in the heart of JTown is known for their Japanese Udon. They make it fresh. What more can you ask for? Oh wait, I know, how about you douse that Udon with sea urchin roe! 329 E 1st St
Los Angeles, CA 90012
This little tanqueria is located near the Fairfax district. They’re really known for their guacamole. What makes this place awesome is the ability to put uni on everything. Yes, you can put uni on everything! For an additional fee, you can put uni on your taco, nacho’s, chicharron, quesadilla, and more! 7360 Beverly Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90036
Located in K-Town, this place has an amazing oyster bar. In addition to that, they have the best uni pasta I’ve had in Southern California. What puts this over the top is the sprinkle of caviar over the pasta. So insanely good! Let’s not forget to mention that they also serve uni out of the shell. 3500 W 6th St Ste 101 Los Angeles, CA 90020
Coming in at number 1 is Quality Seafood on Redondo Beach. Yea, I know it’s not quite LA but it’s still the best place to get sea urchin. Nothing beats fresh live uni served to you while it’s still moving! Let’s not forget the other fresh items on the menu like the crab, lobster, clams, and fish. If you really want to get creative, you should do what I did and start combining the uni with over savory sea creatures and give your taste buds a slap in the face! 130 S International Boardwalk Redondo Beach, CA 90277
I hope you’ve enjoyed my list. I’m sure I’ve left out some pretty awesome places. If you have any recommendations, please let me know! I’m a foodie and I’m always up for trying a new uni spot.
